Student Travel Advice: Safety Tips For International Travel

Any kind of international travel involves an element of danger, but there are ways to prevent unwanted situations just by following simple travel safety tips especially if you’re a student.

As a student traveling alone far away from home, these are the minimum safety precautions you must keep in mind to stay safe.

• Street crimes may vary in form from one culture to another but the motive will be the same. If you came from a small town and it will be your first time to enter the big city, know that there are a lot of people living in the biggest cities with the meanest of hearts.

Student Traveler• If you’re going to a place where people can’t speak your tongue, get a primer on the place’s dialect or language so that you can easily get help when you need it.

• As you plan your travel, make sure that you heed travel warnings and not consider the places where you are not safe to go. You can also register with the Embassy of the country where you’re at, so just in case anything bad happens, your country will know where to find you.

• Apply the safety precautions that you use at home. Think of your new place as danger prone times two. But these precautions should not hinder your chances of enjoying your stay. Just avoid walking along dark and empty streets. As much as possible stash your money in places where thieves won’t bother looking. Stay alert at all times.

• If you’re boarding a plane or crossing a border, never carry the items of others, even if you know that person very well. You can’t plead “not guilty” if inspectors have proven that what you’re carrying are illegal drugs or explosives.

• Know about the laws of the place you’re going to, especially those that apply to travel and conduct in public places. There are certain places where bribery is beginning to become a livelihood for some public officials. In these places, human rights can be very ambiguous.

• Pay attention to your luggage. Never let it out of your sight. In countries where poverty is a problem, your luggage would help a number of families to live through cold nights.

• Be very careful when riding in trains and taxis. You can easily get lost most especially if the taxi driver doesn’t get what you’re saying. You’ll just go around in circles. Worst, it can cost you a fortune.

The point is that preparation and knowledge will keep you safe on your journey. As a student, you must always be aware of the safety practices when traveling abroad.
